PreSchool-Grade 2-Like the adorable badger in Russell Hoban’s classic Bedtime for Frances(HarperCollins, 1960), an equally adorable little zebra has trouble settling down at bedtime. Zee’s parents are watching a scary movie on television, and the youngster wants to join them. Despite his protestations that he would not be frightened, he is sent to bed. After kicking his covers in frustration and ripping his sheet, he comes up with a great idea. Donning the torn sheet, he transforms himself into a « real ghost » and sneaks into the living room to scare his parents. A thrilling game of hide-and-seek ensues, in which the elder zebras and their child chase each other around the house until Zee finally reveals his identity. He then assures his mother and father that there is nothing to fear, and the family settles down for the night. This bedtime adventure is illustrated with charming, shadowy watercolor paintings executed in subdued shades. The pictures depict the various emotions of the characters, helping to build the suspense as the story unfolds. Young readers who like to stay up late will sympathize with likable Zee.-Linda L.
