The story of a fifteen-year-old Missouri boy named Simon who has just finished the third grade for the third time. Convinced by his teacher that it is time for him to move on, he conceives and carries out a plan to drive one thousand turkeys to the gold fields in Denver in order to sell them at a profit and get a start in life.
